HCI driving alienation: autonomy and involvement as blind spots in digital ethics

Abstract The ongoing development and adoption of digital technologies such as AI in business brings ethical concerns challenges. Main topics are the design technologies, their tasks, competencies organizational practice, collaboration with humans. Previous guidelines on ethics mainly consider technological aspects nondiscriminatory AI, its transparency, technically constrained (distributed) agency priorities systems, leaving consideration human factor implementation practice unclear. We analyze relationship between human–computer interaction (HCI), autonomy, worker involvement impact experience alienation at work for workers. argue that autonomy is crucial HCI. Based a quantitative empirical study 1989 workers Germany, analysis shows when high, effect HCI use decreases. results contribute to understanding regard involvement, reveal blind spot widespread debates about have practical implications practice.
